Shahram Sepehri, MD, is Practicing Excellence’s Clinician Experience Program Partner of the Month for March! Dr. Sepehri is an experienced hospitalist at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, who also serves as Assistant Director for Patient Experience.
For Dr. Sepehri, connecting and supporting his patients is his ultimate calling. To see how the Clinician Experience Program helped him grow in this aspect of his care, read our interview with Dr. Sepehri below!
How long have you been in medicine, and what are your favorite parts about it?
I’ve been a practicing hospitalist at Cedars Sinai for sixteen years. I love the fast pace and immediate gratification that comes from inpatient medicine. I derive a lot of satisfaction helping patients navigate healthcare and uncertainty, like a grizzled sea captain in a squall.
Can you tell us one of your favorite patient stories from working in medicine?
In medicine, rarely are you able to see dramatic cures take shape. However, as a close collaborator with the Cedars Sinai liver transplant program, I’ve been able to witness true transformations, near-death recoveries I previously thought impossible.
How has the Clinician Experience Program helped you as a clinician?
The short videos are much more accessible and easy to digest. The limited number of tips in each video helps to not overwhelm you. Practicing them one at a time helped me build a consistent armament of tips.
Could you tell us about a time that a tip came in handy?
In Hospitalist Connection Tip #2: Building Rapport Through Icebreakers, there’s a tip to connect with patients over what’s on the TV. When you have so many pressing demands, it’s so easy to forget about small talk. I practiced this tip several times during the World Cup this year.
What new skills are you looking forward to developing?
I’m always looking for ways to alleviate patient anxiety, starting with controlling my own.
Thank you Dr. Sepehri for sharing your story with us! We are so grateful to have you all as our partners and we look forward to what you accomplish next with the Clinician Experience Project!
